To think or not to think…

A lot of people that read this do not know this about me….
“I WAS A PHILOSOPHY MAJOR”
There, I got it out of my system.. So what the hell happened to me? I had one philosophy class left to graduate. Modern Philosophy. I hated that class because I had already studied all of the philosophers in the class to a lot greater of detail than this 2000 level class went into. I had studied Existentialism with Russel Dancy of Harvard, Philosophy of Mind and Person with Jung, I’ve studied Ancient Philosophy with Morralles, Logic with Rickless, and more.
I’ve met some of the most brilliant people in the world. They were brilliant not necessarily because of what most people consider brilliant, but because the stuff that we were attempting to grasp was so abstract and we used to tear it to shreds. I got by in philosophy by teaching my fellow students. Before a test everyone would usually come over to my apartment and we would study and study and do practice problems out the ass.
I’m posting this because I miss those days. I miss the days of being around people that know a good argument. I don’t mean people that argue hard and hold steadfast, I mean people who can bend, twist, shape, and conform an argument to prove or disprove their point but stay within the realm of logic.
I realized that I missed those days by the fact that I’ve been subscribing to the philosophy community and most of the posts are typical batter from people who have no formal training in philosophy. But then a post came up about relating to Cogito Ergo Sum, Descartes’s proof of his own existence by the fact that he is thinking and the thing that is thinking has to exist and that is himself. The person was asking if that meant that a rock doesn’t exist because it doesn’t think. There were the typical responses back and forth, but there were a few Brilliant responses that knew what they were talking about. They stood out in the crowd because they noticed the fact that it was a fallacy to think that just because A proves B doesn’t mean Not A proves Not B.
I wish I was still sitting in the philosophy break room with Tim discussing wether continuity, memory or something else proves Identity. Wether a Brain in a Vat is a person or 1 million people. If locke war right on with his theory of Ideas.
I have started working on going back to school because I love learning so much. I doubt I will ever get back into philosophy classes and I doubt it would ever be the same, Florida State University at the time had a Faculty that greatly over-reached it’s abilities. Some of the greatest minds were there at that time, and were quickly not there afterwards. They got swept away to ivy league schools and so on to teach.
